Exploring the Great Ideas through Literature from Ancient Times to 1450

Course Description: In this syntopical course guide, students will explore the beginnings of the literary tradition—from the prehistorical roots of writing to ancient Near Eastern works such as The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Enuma Elish—and then set out on an investigation of the major ideas, themes, and conversations that have occurred in diverse writings from The Holy Bible and Egyptian love poems through classical Greece and Rome to the medieval world, Renaissance and Reformation. In addition to exploring touchstone works by the likes of Homer, Virgil, Augustine, Dante, Chaucer,Shakespeare, Cervantes and Montaigne, this course also includes comparative analysis of Indian, Chinese, Islamic, Japanese and Native American literature including the Bhagavad-Gita, The Thousand and One Nights, Kabir’s poetry and the Florentine Codex. This literary survey study guide is unique in that in addition to its global and comparative context, the entire course is “framed” by the exploration of great ideas that can be traced over time and across cultures to give a unique, synthetic and syntopical appreciation of the literary tradition from classical, medieval and Renaissance worldviews.
